The video is just one minute long and is fast-forwarded rather than being in real-time. It also contains no audio, merely a cover of the Bruno Mars song “Just the Way You Are.” However, the emotion between the two people in the video is genuine.
The video depicts Eva Barilaro and her boyfriend Damien. Despite a long-standing battle with alopecia, Eva has spent the last decade trying to grow her hair out. Alopecia is an autoimmune disease in which the body attacks hair follicles, causing a person’s hair to fall out. It’s sometimes wide-spread while other times it only affects small patches of hair.
However, for most people with alopecia, it’s only a matter of time until hair loss becomes noticeable. There is no proven long-term treatment for alopecia. This leads most people to shave their heads rather than live with random patches of hair.
Shaving His Girlfriend’s Head
Rather than enduring the unpleasant experience of seeing her hair fall out in large sections, Eva decided to have her boyfriend give her a buzz cut. The video starts out with Damien shaving his girlfriend’s head. During the first few seconds, Eva tries to smile, although it becomes clear that she’s also fighting back tears.
Damien is meticulous with his duties, showing great care while shaving his girlfriend’s head. He makes sure that Eva’s new buzz cut is perfect and even all the way around.
Once Eva’s head is completely shaved, without any hesitation, her boyfriend shaved his head to show support. From the video, Damien gives no indication to Eva that he’s planning to give himself a buzz cut. He does so unprompted and without warning.
This causes Eva to burst into tears as soon as she looks in the mirror and notices that Damien is giving himself an identical haircut.
Boyfriend Shaved His Head to Show Support
For several seconds, Eva hides her face while feeling all of the emotions of the moment. With his hair only halfway shaved, Damien puts an arm around Eva and comforts his girlfriend.
He then leaves his hand on her shoulder while continuing to shave the rest of his head until the two have identical shaved heads. It was a moment of pure love and support that all other couples should strive to replicate.
“My boyfriend surprised me by shaving his head just after shaving mine,” Eva wrote alongside the video on YouTube. “I will be forever grateful for being so well surrounded. I wish everyone could be supported as well as I am daily. This video is to remember everyone that love is above all and that all one’s need is love. Thank you, Damien, I love you too,”
As the video began to go viral, countless others shared similar stories of shaving their head in solidarity with their loved ones. Meanwhile, many people with alopecia and other diseases that led to hair loss posted pictures of themselves with bald heads.
The outpouring of support on social media replicated the support that Damien showed for Eva in the video and was a rare example of the Internet at its best.
It was a simple one-minute video a boyfriend who shaved his head to show support for his girlfriend. But it showed the power of the Internet to bring people together rather than drive them apart.
