Ben Stiller and Christine Taylor released a combined announcement on Friday that they have plans to divorce.
Ben Stiller and Christine Taylor are one of those Hollywood couples that you could never imagine would seek a divorce. Nevertheless, after 17 years of being seemingly happily married, and an 18-year relationship, they are calling it quits.
The couple has two children together, Ella Olivia, born April 2002 and Quinlin Dempsey, who was born July 2005. In Stiller and Taylor’s statement, they stress that they see their priority as raising their kids as “devoted parents and the closest of friends.”
A gradual, yet quick love
Stiller and Taylor were always assumed to be a solid couple. The media had even previously asked their advice about the incredible stability of their marriage in such an unstable Hollywood environment. Both had emphasized a sense of humor as essential, because “life is life.”
No wonder the news of their separation comes as a shock. The couple initially met one another, while on the set of a never-aired pilot Heat Vision and Jack. Stiller comments that they began as friends that enjoyed hanging out in each other’s company. He states that the relationship began as a gradual thing, which took place over a very quick period.
Additionally, Stiller claims he was hit with his love for his wife “out of the blue.” Their love story was such a straightforward and clean one, without any sordid details, so we can’t help but feel a little sorrow at hearing the news. After all, if they can’t make it “until death do us part,” who can?
Shared movie career
The compatibility between Stiller and Taylor was evident not only in private but also on the silver screen. The pair starred together in four films, their chemistry more than evident.
The couple met in 1999 and married on 2000. Later on, in 2002 Stiller and Taylor both starred together in the first of the two highly popular Zoolander films, and in 2004 they were together in Dodgeball. Taylor would play herself in Stiller’s hit film Tropic Thunder, and just last year they were together for Zoolander 2.
It was during the filming of Zoolander 2 that the press interviewed the couple about the strength of their marriage when Stiller commented upon their unspoken connection.
He stated that the secret to a happy marriage was being able to laugh. Sadly, it appears as though laughter was not a strong enough glue for this union.
Stiller is not long past recovering from a prostate cancer scare. He praises the doctors that were able to take control of the situation, and Stiller came away from the treatments completely cancer-free.
We are unaware if this may have been a wake-up call for the pair, for reasons that will remain unknown. Maybe Stiller’s new lease of life encouraged them to grow individually rather than together.
It is hard to speculate what could possibly split this couple up. We fail to understand why such a content pair of best friends would decide to part company.
The mysteries of Hollywood will always mesmerize us, and accordingly, we don’t seek to interfere with their privacy to learn the real reason such a perfect match should suddenly come undone.
